I used pocket diapers, so I used to double up microfiber inserts at night. Disposable diapers use some natural fibers such as cotton and materials sourced from trees; however, the absorbent layer is made of a water-absorbing polymer. You can always find great deals on monthly diaper subscriptions and the added bonus is that they are usually delivered to your door. So you don’t need to run to local Target on Sunday evening if you run out. And that is before you add in any additional costs. Multiply that cost by the 3.5-years on average it takes to potty train a child, and you are looking at a lifetime cost easily over $3,000.

Changes to your delivery
The most commonly used water softeners in the United States are Borax and Calgon. Soft water does not typically need additional softener - detergent alone is enough! Moderate water may need water softener in the main wash, especially if you use a plant-based or free and clear detergent. At a certain point, you will need water softener in both cycles. It is good to have acloth diaper compatible cream or balm at home in the event that your baby develops some redness. Depending on where you live, there may only be one choice in your area. Unfortunately, some areas do not offer this service at all. In contrast, larger cities may have a few different services to choose from.
My reality is that the combination of hard water and HE washer is making cleaning my own diapers extremely difficult. We have ammonia stink in basically every diaper. My wash routine is cumbersome and I still end up with crunchy diapers (so it clearly still needs tweaking, plus, we're still having ammonia issues).
We have decided to go with home washing over the diaper service. I think we can handle the extra loads of laundry in a week for the substantial savings. I am a birth and postpartum doula in the Ann Arbor Area and would love to know which soap or at least the ingredients in the soap you use. When baby is born , you will email us to initiate service. You can always count on having a full supply of stain-free diapers. We require a credit card on file to pay for your service. We will charge the card on the first of each month for the upcoming month of service.
As mentioned above, we wash our diapers at a super hot 160 degrees F. Not only would those temperatures be unsafe in a home water heater, it would suck up energy 24/7, not just when you are washing diapers. 92 percent of all single-use diapers end up in a landfill. Our landfills aren’t designed to treat human waste, and improper disposal of waste could wind up contaminating waterways and our ecosystem with bacteria and viruses.
